Methodology & Statutory Sources
How Salary Reality India estimates your take-home salary and the official sources behind our rules.
What Salary Reality India does
Salary Reality India estimates how an Indian salary package translates from Cost to Company (CTC) into cash compensation, employer-side benefits or provisions, employee deductions, estimated income tax, and ultimately your take-home salary.
Importantly, CTC does not equal your gross salary, taxable income, or take-home pay. The calculator breaks down the components so you can see what actually reaches your bank account.
CTC vs Cash vs Take-Home
For a more detailed explanation, read our CTC vs Take-Home Salary Guide.
- Cost to Company (CTC): The total cost an employer incurs to employ you. This often includes components that you never receive in cash.
- Guaranteed Cash: The fixed portion of your salary that is guaranteed to be paid out over the year (before taxes and deductions).
- Variable Cash: Performance-linked pay, bonuses, or incentives that are not guaranteed.
- One-time Cash: Components like a joining bonus or relocation allowance paid only in the first year.
- Employer-side Benefits / Provisions: Components included in your CTC that are paid by the employer on your behalf (e.g., Employer PF, Employer NPS) or provisioned for the future (e.g., Gratuity provision).
- Employee Deductions: Mandatory or voluntary deductions from your cash salary (e.g., Employee PF, Professional Tax).
- Estimated Take-Home: The actual cash amount estimated to reach your bank account after all deductions and estimated income tax.
Quick Estimate Methodology
The Quick Estimate tool provides an approximation when you know your CTC but do not have a detailed salary breakup.
Because salary structures vary wildly between employers, it uses modeled salary structures and assumptions (such as typical fixed-heavy, balanced, or variable-heavy splits) to estimate a range. This should not be interpreted as your actual salary structure. It is designed to give you a rough idea, not an exact calculation.
Detailed Calculator Methodology
The Detailed Calculator uses the salary components and employment information you enter. It is intended for use when you have your detailed salary breakup or offer letter.
While it provides a more input-specific and detailed estimate based on your inputs, it does not guarantee payroll-level accuracy. Different employers may interpret rounding, allowances, and tax withholding slightly differently.
Income Tax
For a conceptual overview, see our New vs Old Tax Regime Guide.
New and Old Regime income tax estimates are calculated using your supported inputs and the current configured tax-year rules. The calculator currently uses FY 2026-27 rules.
The engine automatically handles standard deductions, Section 87A rebate, surcharge, marginal relief, and cess where applicable based on the inputs provided.
Note on the Old Regime: Old Regime results depend strongly on the deductions and exemptions you actually enter (like HRA and Section 80C). Therefore, an Old Regime estimate can differ significantly from your real liability when eligible deductions or exemptions are not accurately represented in the calculator.
Provident Fund (PF)
It is important to distinguish between the employee PF deduction and the employer PF contribution.
The employer PF contribution often forms part of your CTC, representing a cost to the company. The employee PF is a deduction taken directly from your gross salary. Both affect your final take-home pay, but in different ways.
PF Calculation Basis & Modes:
- Statutory Eligible Wage Determination: Statutory eligible wages are derived from Basic and DA, with excluded fixed remuneration such as HRA and other fixed allowances subject to the calculator's 50% wage add-back rule under the Code on Wages. The resulting wage basis may therefore differ from Basic alone.
- Full Statutory Eligible Wages Mode (
ELIGIBLE_WAGES): Applies the standard 12% PF contribution rate directly to the full calculated statutory eligible wages without capping at ₹15,000 per month. - Statutory Ceiling Mode (
STATUTORY_CEILING): Restricts statutory eligible wages to the statutory PF wage ceiling of ₹15,000 per month (12% of capped wages) for standard Provident Fund contributions. - Explicit Offer Letter Mode (
OFFER_LETTER_AMOUNT): Uses the explicit annual employer and employee PF contribution amounts specified in your salary breakup.
Professional Tax
Professional Tax is state-dependent. The calculator explicitly supports only a verified set of state rules.
If your state is unsupported, it is excluded from the calculation. This limitation means an unsupported state does not necessarily have zero Professional Tax, merely that the calculator does not currently model it.
Gratuity
We explicitly distinguish between two concepts:
- An annual employer gratuity provision that may be included in your CTC by your employer.
- Your estimated statutory/terminal gratuity entitlement.
These are different concepts. The terminal entitlement is paid out only at the end of your employment (subject to meeting applicable employment type, service duration, and eligibility conditions). It is never part of your regular annual take-home salary.
Employer-Side Benefits & Provisions
Components such as Employer PF, Employer NPS, or Gratuity provision can form a significant part of your CTC without ever reaching your bank account as regular take-home pay. Not every employer provides every component, and their inclusion depends entirely on your employer's policies.
Variable and One-Time Compensation
Variable pay and one-time compensation (like joining bonuses) can significantly affect your first-year cash compensation. However, your regular monthly take-home salary may differ entirely, as it is based primarily on your guaranteed cash components.
Sources / Statutory Sources
Our calculation logic and tax/payroll rules are grounded in official Indian statutory enactments and government notifications.

Clarity of Scope & Framework Distinction:
- Statutory Rules: Slabs, standard deduction, rebate thresholds, statutory wage add-back rules, EPF rates, and state PT schedules reflect statutory regulations.
- Calculator Assumptions: Proportional tax allocation across cash pay elements, Quick Estimate scenario splits (Fixed-Heavy, Balanced, Variable-Heavy), and standard 12-month rental cycles are operational calculator assumptions.
- Unsupported Scope: Non-resident status, capital gains, ESOP vesting, unmodelled state PT schedules, and unmodelled Chapter VI-A deductions are intentionally unsupported.

Limitations
- All results are estimates only.
- Actual payroll treatment and tax withholding can differ based on employer interpretation.
- Employer salary structures differ widely.
- Your true tax liability depends on facts and inputs not necessarily captured by this calculator.
- Unsupported statutory situations (e.g., non-resident taxation, capital gains) are not modeled.
- Old Regime deductions and exemptions are strictly limited to the supported inputs you provide.
- Future statutory changes require a calculator tax-year/rule update to remain accurate.
